Alan Hlad — Entrevista con el escritor norteamericano

 

Alan Hlad es un escritor norteamericano que dejó su trabajo como ejecutivo para dedicarse exclusivamente a la literatura. Es miembro de la Sociedad de Novela Histórica de Cleveland y de la Asociación de escritores de Akron y vive en Ohio con su mujer e hijos.

Sus novelas publicadas aquí son El largo camino a casa y La luz de la esperanza, con animales como protagonistas —palomas mensajeras en el primer caso y la primera escuela de adiestramiento de perros pastores alemanes para ayudar a soldados invidentes en el segundo—. Están ambientadas en la segunda y primera guerra mundial y con sus historias de amor y hechos reales detrás componen unos atractivos frescos históricos que los han convertido en superventas en varios países.

Alan Hlad is an American author who left his job as an executive to start a succesful career in literature. He is a member of the Cleveland Historical Novel Society and the Akron Writers Association and lives in Ohio with his wife and children.

His novels published here are The Long Flight Home and A Light Beyond the Trenches, with animals as protagonists —pigeons in the first title and the first training school for German shepherds to help blind soldiers in the second one. They are set in Second and First World Wars and with their love stories included and real events behind compose great and attractive historical frescoes that have made them bestsellers in several countries.

Alan Hlad — Entrevista/Interview

1. ¿Recuerdas el primer libro que leíste? ¿Y la primera historia que escribiste? 
Do you remember the first book you read? And the first story you wrote? 

El primer libro que leí fue un libro para niños, The Secret Three, de Mildred Myrick. La historia trataba sobre el descubrimiento de una botella que contenía un mensaje codificado que llevó a dos chicos a encontrar un nuevo amigo. Tengo buenos recuerdos de leer la historia en voz alta con mi madre, una mujer artística y una lectora voraz que llenó mi vida de libros.

La primera historia que escribí fue un manuscrito titulado Indigo House. Fue mi primer intento de una novela. Aunque este trabajo probablemente nunca será publicado, el proceso de crear la historia fue inmensamente útil para desarrollar mis habilidades de escritura.

The first book I read was a children’s book, The Secret Three by Mildred Myrick. The story was about the discovery of a bottle containing a coded message that led two boys to find a new friend. I have fond memories of reading the story aloud with my mother, an artistic woman and voracious reader who filled my life with books.

The first story I wrote was a manuscript titled Indigo House. It was my first attempt at a novel. Although this work will likely never be published, the process of creating the story was immensely helpful with developing my writing skills. 

2.  ¿Cuál fue el primer libro que te sorprendió y por qué? 
Which was the first book that shocked you and why? 

El señor de las moscas, de William Golding. Me conmovió la descripción del libro de la buena y mala conducta humana, y las ramificaciones mortales del colapso del orden social. Leí el libro en el instituto y, hasta hoy, es una de mis historias favoritas.   

Lord of the Flies, by William Golding. I was moved by the book’s depiction of good and bad human behavior, and the deadly ramifications of the collapse of social order. I read the book in high school and, to this day, it’s one of my favorite stories.   

3.  ¿Quién es tu escritor favorito? Puedes elegir más de uno y de todos los tiempos. 
Who is your favorite writer? You can choose more than one and of all times. 

¡Es un reto elegir solo un escritor! Tengo muchos autores favoritos, incluyendo a John Irving, Kristin Hannah, Ernest Hemingway, Chris Bohjalian, Paula McLain, Anthony Doerr y Kristin Harmel.  

It’s a challenge to pick only one writer! I have many favorite authors, including John Irving, Kristin Hannah, Ernest Hemingway, Chris Bohjalian, Paula McLain, Anthony Doerr, and Kristin Harmel.  

4.  ¿Algún personaje literario que te hubiera gustado conocer o crear? 
Any literary character you would have liked to meet or create? 

Me gustaría conocer a Santiago, el anciano y decidido pescador en El viejo y el mar de Ernest Hemingway. 

I would like to meet Santiago, the elderly and determined fisherman in Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea. 

5.  ¿Algún «vicio» especial cuando escribes o lees? 

Any special “vice” when you write or read? 

Me encanta tomar café, especialmente temprano por la mañana, cuando escribo. Dos de mis novelas, El largo camino a casa y Churchill’s Secret Messenger, las escribí principalmente en un café local.

I love to drink coffee, especially early in the morning, when I write. Two of my novels, The Long Flight Home and Churchill’s Secret Messenger were mostly written at a local café.    

6.  ¿Y tu lugar y momento favoritos para hacerlo? 

And your favorite place and moment to do it? 

Aunque me encanta escribir en un café, siento que puedo hacerlo en cualquier lugar. No espero que la inspiración golpee antes de ponerme. Escribo todos los días. Para mí, lo mejor es tener una rutina planificada.   

While I love to write in a coffeehouse, I feel that I can write anywhere. I do not wait for inspiration to strike before writing. I write every day. For me, I find it best to have a routine schedule.   

7.  ¿Qué escritor o libro ha influido o inspirado más en su trabajo? 

Which writer or book has influenced or inspired most in your work? 

Siempre me han fascinado los cuentos de amor y guerra, y me vienen a la mente tres libros. Adiós a las armas, de Ernest Hemingway, La mandolina del capitán Corelli, de Louis de Bernières, y El paciente inglés, de Michael Ondaatje.  

I have always been fascinated by tales of love and war, and three books come to mind. A Farwell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway, Corelli's Mandolin by Louis de Bernières, and The English Patient by Michael Ondaatje.  

8.  ¿Algún otro género favorito? 

Any other favorite genres? 

Thrillers.

9.  ¿Qué estás leyendo ahora? ¿Y escribiendo?  

What are you reading now? And writing?

Estoy leyendo El camino a Dunkerque, de Charles More. Es un libro de investigación para una nueva novela que estoy escribiendo que se desarrolla en el otoño de Francia en 1940. 

 I’m reading The Road to Dunkirk by Charles More. It’s a research book for a new novel that I’m writing that is set in the fall of France in 1940. 

10.  ¿Qué piensas del mundo/mercado editorial de hoy en día? ¿Demasiados escritores tratando de publicar? ¿O demasiadas formas de hacerlo? 

What do you think about the nowadays editorial world/market? Too many writers trying to publish? Or too many ways of doing it? 

El poder de las palabras es algo hermoso y animo a más escritores a seguir publicando su trabajo. Aunque he elegido una ruta de publicación tradicional, soy un defensor de múltiples canales para que los autores editen y distribuyan sus libros.    

The power of words is a beautiful thing, and I encourage more writers to pursue publishing their work. Although I’ve chosen a traditional publishing route, I’m an advocate of multiple channels for authors to edit and distribute their books.    

11.  ¿Cómo estás lidiando con estos tiempos difíciles que estamos viviendo? ¿Puedes quedarte con algo positivo para tu trabajo o futuras novelas? 

How are you coping with these troubled times we are living? Will you get something positive for your work or future novels?

Para hacer frente a los tiempos difíciles, leo libros edificantes y me rodeo de personas con una actitud positiva y una creencia de que las cosas buenas les ocurren a aquellos que no se dan por vencidos. En mis novelas, así como en la que estoy escribiendo actualmente, la esperanza es un tema importante. Los sueños y las aspiraciones hacen que la vida sea rica y significativa.

To cope with challenging times, I read uplifting books, and I surround myself with people with a positive attitude and a belief that good things come to those who do not give up. In my novels, as well as the manuscript that I’m currently writing, hope is a major theme. Dreams and aspiration make life rich and meaningful.
